Power ups
I think my first power up was the Bizerka Sphere. This was another part of get the Red Cross out of video games campaign. I wasn't satisfied with health max received from the Bizerker Pak being only 100 so I bumped it up to 150. I mean, you still obtain 100 health from grabbing one; it's just that mine bumps you past the normal health max just like Soulsphere and Megasphere.
Then, there was the issue I created for myself by using a custom color palette. I did a recolor of Soulsphere to deal with it
Somewhere along the way, I got to thinking of Doom's blue potion bottles as the dots eaten by the protagonist in the video game Pac-man. Thinking through a little further, I realized that the coins in the Super Mario Bros. games were about the same thing too. I made a blue potion bottle replacement with the Mario coins. This got me thinking about the little helmet armor bonuses which immediately brought to mind the rings in Sonic the Hedgehog because as long as Sonic had possession of at least one ring, he wasn't dead ~ a shielding effect.
But really, the om-nom-nom factor of Pac-man just does so much more for me...
I'd made this custom chip bag as a 15 texture cell (3 x 5) mural for one map but it just
made my Doomguy too hungry to look at that billboard all the time; he just had to get himself
a bag of his own! And how does one wash down a bag of chips from the Kwik-e Mart? With Faygo
soda pop of course!
About the time I'd been messing with those Sonic rings, a friend of mine was playing with a jimmied donut model in Blender. The sprite resource where I found the Sonic rings also had the sprites for the jumbo ring from Sonic's bonus stages. And in my head, it looked almost like a donut. So, I made an assorted box "O" donuts and assigned them different health bonus and armor bonus amounts depending on how tasty they look to me. I never have to look at Doom's green and blue armor again.
